Can't tag/mention private channel in web and desktop teams with member role

Hello,

We aren't able to tag/@mention private channel in web teams as well as desktop teams, on the other hand we are able to tag private channel members.

We are able to do the both for other standard channels, however not for private channels.

Can someone help me with resolution?? Is it a bug from Microsoft?

I have come across this issue also. While I agree with the statement: "Another reason might be that tags are designed to be team-wide, and private channels are meant to be exclusive and focused spaces for collaboration within a team." we use the tags in private channels to also make the user aware that there is a new message waiting for them in that private channel. I guess we can tag the post as important if the information needs to be reviewed in a timely manner.

According to the Microsoft support document, tags are not supported in private or shared channels. One of the possible reasons for this limitation is that some people with that tag might not have access to a private channel, and therefore they would not receive the notification or see the message. Another reason might be that tags are designed to be team-wide, and private channels are meant to be exclusive and focused spaces for collaboration within a team.

Meanwhile, to get this feature more quickly, we recommend you give the feedback in Teams UserVoice. Many features of our current products are designed and upgraded based on customers’ feedback. With requirements like this increase, the problem may well be released in the future. Thanks for your understanding and support.

Thanks for your response. I can understand that tags aren't supported in private channel. However, sometimes we aren't able to mention the private channel name though having access.

Let me give you an example:

I am having a private channel name as "design" and having members in the channel as userA, userB.

UserA is able to mention userB with the help of "@userB", however userA isn't able to mention design channel as "@design". There are no suggestions. It's happening only to userA.

On the other hand, userB is able to mention userA and also able to mention design channel.

What could be the problem for userA? Both are having same member rights and it's happening only to private channel

First of all, you can try check if the following option is allowed. Then check user A if Teams is the latest version.

The settings were already enabled and we are checking this on web teams.

I am experiencing the same issue. @"Channel-Name" just does not appear as an option in private channels. It works in public channels. Teams version is 1.6.00.27573 (64-Bit) installed on 09.10.2023. Same behaviour in web app. It works on iOS.

@Prasad-MSFT Yes exactly this is what I am doing. And as written: it works in the iPhone app on iOS.

@Prasad-MSFT yes and we have the latest version launched by Microsoft on Oct 10 i.e 1.6.00.27573. Moreover we have the same issue on web teams too

This is also a thing where I am. As noted, the option to mention the channel is already active for the channels in question. The feature worked fine prior to the update to Teams Version 1.6.00.27573 (64-bit) on 10/6/2023.And it only appears to be an issue with the web and desktop versions. The feature works the same as always via the mobile app, even after the app updated for my phone today.

Tested in MS Teams desktop (Microsoft Teams Version 1.6.00.28271) and web client and is able to @mention private channel using as member of that team.

Hi, I'm having a similar issue, can't tag channel (private channel) but others in my team are able to. Not sure why it's not available when others can use this feature?

This doesn't seem to be something that is going to be fixed. According to them we have all imagined the the option was ever available to us. Mass hysteria.

Adding that I used to be able to tag a private channel (last one was in early Nov '23) and now, I no longer have the option so @Ranie Barrett you're not wrong, we sure didn't imagine it.
