TLDR: Facing issues with PC not shutting down completely, black screens during gaming and video streaming, and failed BIOS update after factory reset. Seeking assistance to resolve the problems without hardware replacement due to budget constraints.

A few weeks ago, my PC running Windows 11 started experiencing issues with not shutting down completely. I would return to find my PC still on but all peripherals off. I then would manually shutdown. Additionally, during gaming or streaming, my screens would go black, while the rest of the peripherals stayed on. I performed a factory reset and switched to Windows 10, which reduced the occurrences of these issues.

However, I'm now facing problems with a BIOS update failing to complete successfully, specifically the Dell G5 5000 System BIOS update dated 9/12/2023. Despite attempting manual shutdowns during the update process, the BIOS update does not register, and Dell Update acts as if the update never occurred. The BIOS update requires a system restart. Post factory reset, the PC is not able to complete a prompted restart and idles on with all peripherals off (like the previously failed shutdowns). Weirdly, it can shut down when prompted, just not shut down as part of a restart.

Previous troubleshooting: Full driver updates, up to date Windows update, and full hardware scan. No issues have been found by scans and troubleshooting. All other BIOS updates have been successful.

I appreciate any help in resolving these issues as my PC is crucial for my academic work, and I'm unable to invest in new hardware at the moment.

    Hello

I understand that you’re experiencing multiple issues with your PC. Let’s address them one by one:

PC not shutting down completely: This issue could be due to the “Fast Startup” feature in Windows 10, which is designed to help your PC start up faster after shutdown. However, it can sometimes cause problems with shutdown. You can disable this feature by going to Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Uncheck Turn on Fast startup.

Black screens during gaming and video streaming: This could be due to outdated graphics drivers, a problem with the monitor connection, improper power-saving settings, prolonged hardware stress, excessive heat generation, or misconfigured game settings. You could try updating your graphics drivers, checking your hardware connections, adjusting power settings, and monitoring system temperatures. If the issue persists, it might be game-specific, in which case repairing game files, updating the game, lowering the in-game resolution, and changing other graphics settings might help.

Failed BIOS update after factory reset: If a BIOS update fails, it’s usually because the wrong BIOS update was attempted, or there was a power interruption during the upgrade. In your case, since the Dell G5 5000 System BIOS update is not registering, you could try the following steps:

Ensure your motherboard or laptop supports a BIOS auto-recovery feature. If it does, use a working computer to download the latest/compatible BIOS file. Copy the content to a USB flash drive before inserting this into the problematic PC. Start/restart your PC and this takes you to the flash utility, where you can proceed the same way you had updated the BIOS before.

If the above step doesn’t work, you could try to perform a system restore or reinstall Windows.

If your PC is not able to complete a prompted restart, it could be due to various reasons including software conflicts, hardware issues, or corrupted system files. You could try running the Power troubleshooter, performing a clean boot, booting into Safe Mode, or resetting your PC.
