Job Completed with Warnings but can't really see a problem

I get this occasionally in the description field of the backup. So I go to "View Details" and look at the "failed file list". 99% of the time the files are few, may 1 to 3 files total. They always have the same extension; .msg (Outlook). They usually, but not always have a long file name that may or may not have odd characters in them. I have always attributed the error to the filename. That being said, if I launch a recovery I can find and get that same file and restore it to another location and it launches fine in Outlook, as it should. Evidently we have a user that drags and drops the email to the location on the file share in the server that is being backed up.

Has anybody seen this, should I be more concerned? Is there a way to track down exactly what the issue is?

Sorry, I only work Tuesday and Thursday so unless critical my responses may be delayed.

No, I have not reached out to the support team. My experiences with MS support have be exceptionally bad lately so it has become a last ditch option for me. That being said, I'll reach out to them today.

Sorry for the late reply to this.

I have reviewed this in more depth and found:

These errors happen in every nights backup

The files that fail always have the extension .msg

The user that puts them on the server is dragging and dropping emails from Outlook to the server to track.

Not all the files she does this with are marked by Azure backup as "failed".

The files that are marked are in fact there in the backup, able to be restored, able to be opened by Outlook after restoration

The errors that appear always look like this: DATA FAILURE 0x80990f91 D:\Shares\Company\Accounting\2023 Accounting Archives\Pending Claims\Company Name\Region\Re_ Account-Home-1898234.msg

They always have the same error code.

They seem to all have very long names consisting of Letters, Numbers, Symbols, Spaces

I keep getting following error in Azure:

Yes, mostly, I did find a few other, more explainable missed files, but they were likely locked and not important.

But I took a long look at this yesterday and found a consistency. All the missed files were Outlook replies. So, in a reply the subject line all starts with "Re:". Because that is the file name when you drag and drop a colon is not allowed. So it gets converted to an underscore. This is consistent with all the missed files.

I then took the "Re_" string and put it in an Ascii converter. The converter said that was 82 101 95. Which is correct. So I don't know what this means. Again, if I do a restore of those files (there are usually less then five per night), I can double click each one and they all open in Outlook and are fine. The local backup has no errors, just cloud. Oh, it's Server 2022 FWIW. MARS Version 2.0.9254.0

I don't want to exclude them, but I would like to stop getting the alerts, is there anyway to do this?

@Jim The MARS agent supports backing up a wide range of file types, including .msg files.

Therefore, you can use the MARS agent to back up .msg files from Windows machines to Azure. However, it is important to note that the MARS agent does not provide any special handling for .msg files. They are treated like any other file type and are backed up and restored in the same way.

Additionally, it is important to ensure that the .msg files are not open or in use by any applications when they are being backed up. If a file is open or in use, the MARS agent may not be able to back it up properly.

In summary, the MARS agent supports backup of .msg files, but they are treated like any other file type and must not be open or in use during the backup process.

If I have the user manually remove the "Re_" in the file name and replace it with just "Re" the warnings stop. This confirms there is an issue with the auto renaming of the file during drag and drop to replace the colon with an underscore.

I have sent you the requested email. Again, I cannot use support as there is a cost involved which would involve more paperwork then it is worth. And honestly, after recent experiences with 365 support over subscription renewal I rue the day I need to call them again.
