Azure VM patch manual update stuck in progress. How can it be cancelled?

I have a one-time update that was initiated against a VM. The maintenance window was left at the default (235 minutes). However, it has been running for over 24 hours and still says it is 'InProgress' with no updates. There does not appear to be an option to cancel it in the Azure Update Manager | History panel. How can this be cancelled?

There are a few steps and questions that should help uncover the cause of this issue or at least isolate it:

Is it the first time that you had scheduled update using Azure Update Manager for this machine? Has it even worked in the past?

Is the machine turned on? For Azure Update Manager to install patches to the machine, it must be turned on for at least 15 minutes before the maintenance schedule - for details, see Unable to apply patches for the shutdown machines

Review the logs related to Azure Update Manager based on the steps mentioned here to check if there are errors logged or the agent is running - Azure Update Manager Troubleshooting

Also check the "Activity Logs" from the resource menu of this VM to see if there are errors around the time of update initiation.

Yes, this is the first time it has been scheduled using Azure Update Manager.

Is the machine turned on?

The VM is turned on. It does get shut off after business hours via Azure policy because it is a non-production VM. However, it stayed on beyond the length of the maintenance window. Even more reason I would've expected the manual update to complete (even as a failure) once the VM was shutdown for the day.

Review the logs related to Azure Update Manager based on the steps mentioned here to check if there are errors logged or the agent is running - Azure Update Manager Troubleshooting

I am still trying to obtain RDP access onto the machine. Once I can do this I will be able to check these logs.

Also check the "Activity Logs" from the resource menu of this VM to see if there are errors around the time of update initiation.

In the VM Activity Logs, there is an entry for the failure. The error messages are:

"The resource operation completed with terminal provisioning state 'Failed'.\",\"details\":[{\"code\":\"VMGuestPatchInternalError\",\"message\":\"An internal execution error occurred. Please retry later.\"}]}}", ``` It seems like the schedule patch status is most likely 'failed' but it never got updated from 'In progress' and it is stuck like this in Azure Resource Graph.

It appears that the Azure Virtual Machine agent (VM agent) is not running or is unable to communicate with Azure because of which the job could not be started and/or the status could not be communicated back.

I Would suggest Reviewing the logs related to Azure Update Manager based on the steps mentioned here to check if there are errors logged or the agent is running - Azure Update Manager Troubleshooting and if there are any errors.

Based on the symptoms, I would also suggest reviewing the Application and System log in Event viewers to see if there are events related to failure/crash of the agent itself.

Hi @AnuragSingh-MSFT - We tried re-running the same maintenance configuration against this VM and it has worked. However, the previous run that is 'InProgress' is still in the history with the same status. It seems like the history entry needs to be changed in Azure. Is there a way this can be done, either by us or someone in Azure support? The VM has been shutdown nightly, so I would expect if it was a stuck process on the VM, it would've been terminated by now and the status would've changed.

sac16, Apologies for the delayed response.

I heard back from the team and the past run status in history cannot be updated. The date in Azure is not updated for Update Manager after it has been pushed there. The InProgress result will age out according to the table’s retention policy (7 days for assessment and 30 days for installation).

Hi @AnuragSingh , thank you for checking up on this. The status for this result was created on 10/19, so it should age out in 6 days from now. I will confirm this happens next week.
