What does "following" mean for a question?

I read the page about following, but could not figure out what it means exactly.

When I ask questions here, I follow them, but I do not get any notifications of answers or comments, so I have to go to my question pages and refresh them periodically to see if there are any new answers or comments.

    Microsoft Q&A users need the ability to stay updated on the content relevant to them. One of the ways is using the following functionality that supports a user to follow a Q&A question, tag, or user.

    It simply means that you have interacted with the thread and it will pop up in the "questions I follow" menu on your home page.
