When I try to check a Microsoft email from eM Client, I get redirected to a dead end; what is the fix?

I get the above message from account.live.com when my email software (eM Client) tries to check my hotmail account.

If I then click "Continue" I receive the following message: "This site is trying to open eM Client. https://login.live.com wants to open this application."

This message has two buttons: Open and Cancel. If I click Open, then two additional things happen immediately:

  1. A Microsoft Store instance of eM Client is opened on my desktop with the title "Inbox - Local Folders - eM Client for Microsoft Store". This is despite the fact that my original version of eM Client was already running before I clicked the Open button (and in fact was the application that triggered the account.live.com action which led to the above alert box).
  2. I receive an alert message stating: "eM Client for Microsoft Store doesn't have a valid license. You can still access your data offline, but online synchronization and sending of emails has been disabled. Once a license is activated, you will be able to use eM Client for Micosoft Store in online mode again." Note that my other email accounts synchronize fine with the original instance of eM Client, but my hotmail account sends me on this deadend.

login.live.com should not be redirecting me to a Microsoft Store version of my eM Client software. Any help with resolving this bug would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi @Lloyd Waugh ,

    Welcome to our Q&A forum!

By research, I found a thread where a user reported a similar issue. According to an independent advisor, this is the expected behavior when using an Outlook.com or Hotmail.com address. However, this does not explain why you are being redirected to the Microsoft Store version of eM Client.

I also found a thread on the eM Client forum where a user reported issues with the Microsoft Store version of eM Client. The user was advised to download the latest version from the official website and enter their license key. It’s possible that this could resolve your issue as well. https://forum.emclient.com/t/win-10-store-version-of-em-client/73467
