Trying to re-use Azure DNS Label from an old tenant. I made sure the Public IP was deleted but it has been over 12 Hours and I cannot re-use the DNS label for my VM.

As the title states I deleted all my resources from a previous tenant and made sure the Public IP I was utilizing with the DNS label was deleted. It has been 12 hours and I still cannot add that DNS label to a new public IP. When I do an nslookup to look up the DNS it is not in use.

What can I do?

DNS name label must be unique within the Azure location you create the name in across all subscriptions and all customers.

A public IP address is a resource with its own properties. You can create a public IP resource without any IP address (dynamic assignment/basic SKU), along with the DNS label and even though it is not assigned to any VM, it will retain the properties configured to it, so if there is an unassociated Public IP resource with the required DNS name in a particular region, then you won't be able to use the same DNS label for another public IP in the same region.

You mentioned that the Public IP you were utilizing with the DNS label was deleted.

What happens when you try to type in the DNS label in the new Public IP resource? Do you get an error saying "DNS name label not available. Try using a different label"?

For example, I have a Basic SKU (dynamic assignment) Public IP resource in West US which is not associated to any VM and don't have an IP address as it is still unassociated but has a DNS label as below:

Now, when I try to assign this DNS label to a new Public IP resource, I will get the below error:

So, you see even if the DNS label doesn't resolve to any IP address (in case of Basic SKU unassociated IP), the DNS label is still reserved by a Public IP resource and unless that resource is deleted or the DNS label is removed from that resource, you will not be able to add the DNS label to a new Public IP resource.
