Does Teams chat compress files when sharing?

If I attach a file and send it in chat to someone, what happens to it exactly? It seems that it gets uploaded to a folder in sharepoint somewhere, but does it get compressed at all by Teams? Is it safe to send large files to someone with this method without losing quality? Or should I zip the files first before sending to protect them? This is for both images and video.

    @Ethan Waghorn

    Is it safe to send large files to someone with this method without losing quality?

    As we can learn from this document, from the perspective of Microsoft Teams, it only has a limit for the number of file attachments. Actually, when we upload a file over Teams chat, it uploads to OneDrive for Business or SharePoint(see File storage in Teams), so it's controlled by the SharePoint/OneDrive limits which is 250GB
