Authenticator App not providing a Security Code to match login attempt on computer screen

Hi, I'm having issues when using the authenticator app. I have it set up and I am being prompted to approve or deny my login request (so it kind of works), but I should be getting a security code so that I can validate my sign in request to the one in the app. I am not getting the code, just the approve or deny option. My concern is that someone else may try to login/hack at the same time and I approve the wrong sign in request. I tried removing the account within authenticator, I updated the authenticator app, I turned off and then on the 2 step verification and still, I only get the approve or deny options. I did this with my mom's account and she does get a security code on the computer screen and she matches it to the same security code within the authenticator app, then can hit approve or deny.
