Linked Server connection between Azure and On premise

I tried to create a Linked Server between On Premise SQL database and Azure SQL database using the Azure database remote login credentials as security context.
I got an error message "Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53]. OLE DB provider "MSOLEDBSQL" for linked server ''AZURE SERVER'' returned message "A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible."
I'm connected to my company's vpn while doing this remotely and I have access to both Instances vis SSMS. Is there anything I need to be aware off, maybe port or firewall settings to link both servers? Thanks in advance.

Nandan Hegde 31,511 Reputation points MVP2023-11-03T16:53:41.3733333+00:00 Can you plz confirm whether you are able to access the Azure SQL database from the server on which the on prem database is hosted? Try connecting to the Azure DB via SSMS from that Server and confirm.

Azure SQL database gets created but fails connection test with the above error 'Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53]. OLE DB provider "MSOLEDBSQL" for linked server ''AZURE SERVER'' returned message ''Login Timeout expired''. OLE DB provider MSOLEDBSQL for linkedserver ''Azure Server'' returned messaged "A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible."
My assumptions are maybe Firewall settings are not configured to allow remote inbound connections to Azure
