How to change a user's permission through a sharing link?

When using a link to share the site, the user will automatically have permission set as "contribute". How can I change permission for those who gain access through a link?

Hi @Natalie Soto,

Do you invite user to the SharePoint site via the "Advanced permissions settings" page like the screenshot below?

You can click "SHOW OPTIONS" to expand the settings and select the permission level you want when sharing. User's image

To change the permission level for existing access users, you can go to the Home page >> click the gear >> Site permissions >> Advanced permissions settings >> Check the user >> Edit User Permissions.

Hi, thank you for your response. I was thinking more about in the context where a user can just copy the link to the website (not a direct invitation) and whoever visits automatically becomes a website visitor with "contribute" permissions. Is there a way to change the permission in that situation?

Hello,

What about in the case where users can share direct links? I copied the URL of the site and send it to a user. When they click on it, they are automatically given "contribute" permission. Is there a way to change the permission for users who gain access this way?

What about if for example, someone just copies the link and sends them to other users? Not that they're not invited by me

Sry I still cannot understand "I copied the URL of the site and send it to a user. When they click on it, they are automatically given "contribute" permission". I never heard about the process of granting permission like this. As per my knowledge, the method in the screenshot above is the only way a user can be given access via a link. And you can decide the shared user can edit or view by this setting.

Of course, all site members can share links. This is by default and we have no way to limit it. SharePoint is designed for team collaboration.

Like a direct link when sharing the site. I had a user saved the URL address from when they first used the site as a bookmark. Now when they clicked on that same previous link, it gave them "contribute" permissions. If they decide to share the link (not the way you are not showing, but simply copying and pasting the address they saved, to send to another person, that person can open the site and get contribute permissions.
