Migration from SP2013 to SP 2019

Hi All,

I have to migrate production env from SP2013(farm includes 2 WFEs & 1 DB server) to SP2019 and there is FBA configured on the SP2013.
I have already migrated the staging environment i.e. firstly I created SP 2016 & then SP2019 farm, but in staging we do not have FBA. Only in production we are having FBA.
And we will be building production environment only for SP2019.

Below are the queries that I have:

1. We are planning to migrate production SP 2013 sites to our existing Staging 2016 server and then directly to production 2019, because client does not want the extra cost of production env. for SP 2016. Please suggest if this is possible.
2. In this case how to migrate my FBA DB from prod 2013 to 2019 prod env. (Please define steps if possible)
3. I have managed metadata service and other services as well, so how to migrate these services (Please define steps if possible)

Yes it's possible, you could use Staging SP 2016 and then move directly to S2019.

You can reuse the SharePoint 2013 FBA database in SharePoint 2019. Configure FBA

I would prefer to setup the FBA 1st then migrates the Site collections from SP 2013 to SP 2019.

Setup FBA in SharePoint 2019 using existing DB.

if using the 2013 FBA database, backup the DB and restore in 2016 environment and then move it 2019, complete the SharePoint 2019 configuration (web.config changes, permission, STS configuration etc).

Yes, you can migrate production SP 2013 to Staging SP 2016 and then directly to production SP 2019.

You could refer to the following technical documentation: **
If you are moving form SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint 2019 environment, you need to know the following steps that highlight the steps involved in a general SharePoint 2019 migration.
a) Upgrade to a temporary SharePoint 2016 farm;
b) Upgrade to destination SharePoint 2019 environment**

Also, you could reuse the SharePoint 2013 FBA DB in SharePoint 2019.

1. I suggest you setup the FBA firstly, and then migrates the Site collections.
2. Setup FBA in SharePoint 2019 using existing DB

I have further few queries listed below

1. Can I directly use the SP2013 prod FBA DB and restore it in SP 2019 prod DB without moving it first to SP 2016 staging environment?
2. In case of migrating service applications, Do I need to first copy the service applications from Prod SP2013 to Staging 2016? Or Can directly migrate the service applications from Prod SP2013 to Prod SP2019?
3. As I will be having 2 WFEs servers in the SP 2019 farm, so do I have to create service applications on each WFE or only one of them?
4. Is there anything else that I need to take care of or plan before migration from SP 2013 to SP 2019?

No you can't move directly from SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint 2019 via database migration, you have to first move it to SP 2016 and then move it to SP 2019.

Yes, you have to move the Service Applications first to SP 2016 and then upgrade to SP 2019.

No, Service Applications are farm based, you just need only one and Service Applications to be running on the Application Server's.

Make sure you upgrade your custom solutions as well.

Thanks a lot for your responses!! It is helping me a lot..

I am confused regarding the MinRole that I should choose while installing SP 2019 prod env.
Can you guys help me with the Minrole that now I should choose while installing SP 2019. In SP 2013 prod env. there are 2 servers & 1 DB server. It was configured years ago and by someone else.
And also there is load balancing that is configured in the 2013 env. between the 2 servers.

Is there any criteria that can confirm which role to choose. There are different services on both servers.
