DB VM server sizing - Need advise

Hello Experts,

Need your help in database VM Sizing ! For a new application requirement, we are asked to provide specs for Database VM. There was a big debate within our SQL team but no definite conclusion made.

So could you pls help on below points ?

  1. what all metrics to consider for Database VM Sizing ?
  2. Do we have any direct formula to Size database server specs ? 

Kindly advise on these points so that we shall try to implement the same to our DB server.

    Hi Mudhu,

    Most important thing is to consider CPU , Memory and IO. All three metrics are key.

    Unfortunately there is not a formula to get the right size. The main benefits in Azure is that you can scale up and down any Azure VM so if you need more horse power you can easily do it.

    It is also important to follow the best practices for SQL Server on Azure VMs to make sure to take all the benefits
