The message Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed is a generic error that means that SQL Server did not start when Setup wanted to run configuration steps. To understand why it did not start, you need to look in the SQL Server errorlog, which you find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL15.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\LOG\ERRORLOG.

If you see a message about 256 misaligned reads, you are running into a known issue where Windows 11 for some disk drives reports a sector size that SQL Server does not cope with. Microsoft has published an article with workarounds for the problem.

If you don't see the message about misaligned reads, feel free to upload the errorlog here, so we can look at it. You will need to rename to ERRORLOG.txt for the forum software to accept it.

I note that you seem to already have an instance of Developer Edition on the machine. Is this instance working properly, or did you first try on install Developer and that failed too?

Thanks for the errorlog. It does not match your details.txt, though You details.txt is from 2 Dec, the errorlog from 21 Dec. The reason I have a concern is that in the errorlog you posted, the startup options are incorrect. There should be a number of special options that Setup needs. In the Details.txt, they seem to have been provided correctly.

What I suspect may have happened beween 2 and 21 Dec is that you have made a partial cleanup, but left some remnants which confuses Setup. You could try following this link: https://www.sql-easy.com/learn/how-to-uninstall-sql-server/. Another poster I tried to help found this article, and after following the instructions, he was able to install SQL Server.

It may be that install still fails after a cleanup, but the error may be different. Please share Summary.txt, detail.txt and ERRORLOG in that case.

i uninstalled everything and reinstall . it show exit code (decimal): -2068052377 Error desciption: Invalid command line argurment.

Again, your detail.txt and your ERRORLOG are not in sync. But it does not really matter. This time the ERRORLOG shows the correct startup parameters, but still thinks that the other system databases than master are on the path they have in the installation media. In Detail.txt, the error is now that the MSI file for the Database Engine is missing, and this is something which is uncovered long before Setup tries to start SQL Server.

I have a feeling that your machine is quite messed up by now. It is very difficult to assist with such situations when I don't have access to the machine. It is certainly not the case that it would be trivial, even if I had access.

Since you have Home Edition, I guess that installing a Virtual Machine is not an option. The other alternative is to flatten the disk an re-install, and that's certainly nothing I would like to do myself.

I'm sorry that I cannot give better help, but I you understand that these situations are challenging.

Well, what you could try is to go for Developer Edition, and when you start the install, select Download Media. Once you have the media, open the ISO and run Setup. Don't try to repair the existing instance, but install a new instance. If this fails, please do not make a second attempt, but share the logs from this only attempt.
