.DOC file tags disappeared after upgrading to Win.11

I've recently upgraded from Win 10 to Win 11. I have a library of Word (.doc) files that were all tagged. After the upgrade, the tags are no longer visible. Also, in the details window, the value field for tags is not available. I've run the troubleshooter and rebuilt the index. The folder is located in my Onedrive. Advice?

It could be that since the file is in the OneDrive folder, it is not recognizing the tags data in the files. Another possibility is that you don't have it displayed. Try the following:

1- Enable the "Tags" column in file explorer: If you change the View to "Details", you can then right-click on the columns to select which categories appear. If the file has Tags data, it should show there.

2- Open the details pane: Similarly, in the View menu you can open "Show" and select the Details Pane, which should show the Tags information.

The metadata should still be there even if File Explorer is not reading it.

The tags column is blank. And in the details pane, it does not display a "tag" detail if I wanted to add a tag. Today I opened and viewed a few of the files, and after I closed them, the tag appeared in the tag column. And I noticed that the status column changed from "available online" to available on this device. So if I could make all files available on this device, would that reinstate the tags?

It sounds like a good test to perform. To be honest, I'm not 100% certain of how tags are interpreted in Windows 11. I have tested the same in a fresh Win 11 and I experience the same as you do, no ability to edit or add tags from File Explorer, but I have managed to add them from the "Save As" option window.

I do know that tags as they used to work previously, do not work in OneCloud. Maybe the OneCloud file indexer is not recognizing it, and when you make them locally available you switch to use your local File Explorer index which does recognize the Tags.

If it's any consolation, since it happens in any Windows 11 machine, it means it's not a fault in your system, rather a change in how tags work in Win11.

So after spending some time investigating, I have found a solution to this issue. Open up OneDrive, go to Settings, and expand "Advanced Settings". In there, you will see "Files on Demand", which will give you access to your files when you are offline. If you select "Download all Files", you will then have copies of all your files on the local drive, which of course will take up the corresponding space on your drive. However, after downloading all files, all of the tags reappeared in the folder, and the status fields all changed to "Always available on this device"
