So I had this good working HyperV VM machine (windows 10); used to work fine for couple of years. Now suddenly it gives this error (below).
Virtual machine 'XXXXX'. could not be started because the hypervisor is not running.
'XXXXX' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID 8El XXXXXX7CCC98) Virtual machine 'XXXXX' could not be started because the hypervisor is not running (Virtual machine ID 8El XX238-504D-XX_XXX_XX_587XXXX).
I've tried multiple online suggestions to re-starting hypervisor but they dont work.
Someone here suggested below :
"The simplest and probably quickest solution here would be to export or copy off the VHD, clean install the host operating system, patch fully, add hyper-v role, then create a new VM on with an identical configuration as existing, then when you get to step Connect Virtual Hard Disk choose Use an existing virtual hard disk and point to the VHD. This, of course, assumes the VHD itself is not somehow problematic."
Now I really would not like to clean install my host machine (physical main PC where hyper V is installed) - so pls. suggest a way to repair /inspect the host PC and not reinstall it from blank.
And I'm not very experienced with VMs so I'd like step-by-step directions to do the above mentioned solution. Objective is to see all steps to recreate or copy my existing VM (and all software on it) to this new instance, if it works?

And if its working there, how do I get my current VM (with all software/data on it) transferred to new VM
You don't, but the only test here is to confirm whether the hypervisor works or not as first step.
How can I fully save the existing VM so that I can enable it and not loose anything on it before doing all this?
