Having recently bought a Lenovo Windows 11 laptop, to replace my HP 10 laptop, I am having great difficulty achieving the same Private network sharing with my HP Windows 10 PC that I enjoyed previosly on the two Win 10 machines. When I try networking from my PC it shows the Lenovo icon but immediately comes up with "Windows cannot access \computer name You do not have permission to access (computer name)." When I try networking from my latop, it does not display the PC icon but when I type in \my name-pc\ (something I picked up a few years ago), it takes me to my PC's Users folder and from this the Desktop, Documents,Pictures, Music and Videos foders, which are the same folders on my laptop that I am trying to share but being prevented by the "cannot access ... " message.

I have been trying for days to resolver this issue, searching for answers on the internet and implementing what they recommend as a fix' including Microsoft articles and amending User permissions on subsequent Properties folders. It could well be that I have missed something obvious. I hope so But I would really appreciate any suggestions as to how to obtain the necessary permissions.

To fix permissions for sharing on a Windows 10 PC from a Windows 11 laptop, you can try the following steps:

    1. Ensure that both devices are connected to the same network.
    2. On the Windows 10 PC, share the folder you want to access by following the steps in this Microsoft article.
    3. On the Windows 11 laptop, try accessing the shared folder by typing \\computer name\shared folder name in the File Explorer address bar. If you receive an error message, try the following steps:
      • Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows key + R.
      • Type secpol.msc and press Enter.
      • In the Local Security Policy window, expand Local Policies and select Security Options.
      • In the right pane, double-click the policy named "Network security: LAN Manager authentication level".
      • Select the option "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated".
      • Click OK and close the Local Security Policy window.
    4. If you still cannot access the shared folder, try enabling insecure guest logons on the Windows 10 PC by following the steps in this Microsoft article.
