As an E3 customer, do I need a separate CAL to access a Microsoft server that is hosted on-premise, or is it included in the E3 license?

As an E3 customer, you have the right to access Microsoft servers that are hosted locally without having to purchase an additional client access license (CAL).
This applies to both standard and enterprise editions of Exchange Server Office 365 E3/E5 and Enterprise Mobility + Security E3/E5 also include CAL-equivalent access rights (also called dual access rights).
You have an excellent overview of all licenses on Aaron project page M365 - https://m365maps.com/
Mit Office365 E3/E5 can be used to access Office servers, with EMS E3/E5 to access Windows servers in your own data center.

    Hello,

E3 license has different types, such as windows 10/ windows 11/ office…, so some of the E3 license do not cover the benefit for servers, for example it is only for windows 10 pro, and you can use the subscription to upgrade to widnows 10 enterprise.

It is better to contact a sales expert to check the contract and benefit:

    Microsoft 365 E3 | Microsoft 365 Enterprise

    Best regards,

    Wesley
