Dear All,

I'm looking to understand the infrastructure requirements for setting up primary and secondary DHCP servers in an environment where my office all computers are connected to Azure AD. Do I need traditional domain controllers, Active Directory, or DNS server/service/configurations?

  1. Status:
    • All computers in our office are joined to Azure AD.
  2. Requirements: -
    • To provide the IP address to all computers in need DHCP server/service.
=> I intend to use two machines – one as the primary DHCP server and the other as the secondary DHCP server."
  3. Primary Question:
    • "Do I need a traditional domain controller or Active Directory infrastructure to provide DHCP services for computers joined to Azure AD?"
      - "Do I need a local DNS server/service, and how should the DNS configuration be handled for these DHCP servers?"

Thank & Regards,

Ganesh Karki

Hello, To answer you question, if all your office computers are already joined to AAD, there's no need to configure on-premises infrastructure.  Instead, you can use Azure DHCP Server/relay agent and Azure DNS. However, I believe sometimes you will need internal dns resolution hence you will need to setup a local DNS Server for internal DNS query. I hope this answer can help you well.
