This is my third attempt at asking this, the previous 2 questions have been deleted with no explanation. My Win 10 PC updated itself and restarted itself a couple of days ago. I had goodness knows how many apps/files open, I have a court case in 3 weeks and just cannot risk losing data. I have searched for this issue and found some astonishing answers. One says turn off automatically restart after system failure, which is irrelevant. Many others say it's impossible, some suggest registry or policy tweaks. Win Pro has gpedit.msc of course, is it possible to set up a policy like that in Win 8.1 - download but don't install until authorised? If not I can I turn off updates altogether?

Hello. Regarding your concern, it is possible to defer Windows updates in Windows 10 Pro. You can do this by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options. From there, you can choose to defer updates for up to 365 days. However, it is not recommended to turn off updates altogether as this can leave your system vulnerable to security threats. Additionally, it is important to regularly back up your important files to prevent data loss. Best Regards,

The update option for Windows 10 changed and if you go to Windows Update , you have option to Pause Windows Update for 7 days. You could also setup Active hours, so your PC won't be restart. Download is normally done automatically but Windows Update is smart and it won't affect your performance.
