I have few confusion for SQL migration from OnPrem to Azure in between DMA/DMS/ Data studio & Azure Migrate

I have the below queries

  1. If Azure Migrate Readiness Report Recommend Onprem DB into Azure SQL Managed Instance & at onprem location, DMA was set up. In that case, is it required to set up Data Studio also at the on-prem location, as DMA does not support Managed Instance?
  2. If Azure Data Studio has set up an OnPrem location for SQL migration. Are we still required to Create an Azure Migrate Project & perform the Discovery, Assessment & Readiness Report? Can we ignore the Azure Migrate Project? Is Azure Data Studio enough for everything (Discovery, Assessment, Readiness Report & Migration)?
  3. The DMS is located at 2 places, inside Azure Migrate & a separate resource as Database Migration Service. Do both carry the same feature? Or ONLY "Azure Database Migration Service" exist as a separate resource supposed to be used?
  4. If I am using ONLY the separate resource as Database Migration Service, is still there a need to Create an Azure Migrate Project for Discovery, Assessment & Readiness Report Recommendation for SQL?
  5. In the Azure Migrate Project, the DB that has Discovered, Assessment & display under Readiness Report Recommendations, will that auto-display within Assessment tools=> Azure Migrate: Database Assessment?
  6. Is this Migration also a DR solution or works ONLY ONE-WAY? means ONLY Failover from On-Prem to Azure or support Failback also?

    Dear Herminder

    Good Day

I am not very expert in Migration. But recently i have implemented On premise SQL Server (2019) to Azure SQL Database (PaaS).

    High level steps

    1. Download DMA tool
    2. Create the project and select assessment -> Gives how compatibility and any features depreciated
    3. Select Migration - provide source and destination details and select ONLY schema migrate
    4. Azure Portal --> Database Migration Service --> create project --> provide source and destination details --> migrate data

Please feel free to reach out to me for more insights

Hi herminder bedi •, Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

As I understand, you want to perform migration of SQL server from On-Premises to Azure.

Perform Migration to Azure SQL Managed instance using DMS as per below documents:

    Offline: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/dms/tutorial-sql-server-to-managed-instance

    Online: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/dms/tutorial-sql-server-managed-instance-online

For Azure Data Studio ,refer https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/dms/migration-using-azure-data-studio?tabs=azure-sql-mi

For Azure Migrate part, I would recommend you to raise a separate question with the tag so that Migrate team can help you with the solution.

Hope this helps. Let us know if further queries.

    Thanks
