How to fix the table caption error throughout the document?

Hi all, I have a document I am writing from a template produced by a colleague. Every time I add a table and caption it, this error comes up: "Table Error! No text of specified style in document."
I've learnt to fix it on each table by:

  • right-clicking on each error
    -opening Edit Fields
    -selecting "Caption" under field properties

This fixes the issue only temporarily, because when I go edit some other part of the document and come back to the table, the problem's back.

How do I fix it permanently and for the whole document? Thank you

    Hi @Marina Forte

If you press Alt + F9, what will you find for the field?

    Is there a STYLEREF field?

    • If yes, for example, {STYLEREF 1 \s}, it is looking for a paragraph with the built-in style "Heading 1". But if you don't have any Heading 1 paragraphs with autonumbering linked to the style in the document, you'll get such syntax error, please delete {STYLEREF 1\s} field for a test.
    • If not, but your caption of tables was referring to a heading number (chapter), please click insert caption > click on numbering > uncheck "include chapter number".
