Azure tenant account/owner change

At this moment our company Azure tenant was created by our colleague using his private Microsoft account, and all users are created using identity <COLLEAGUE_FULL_NAME>.onmicrosoft.com. We would like to change that to <COMPANY_NAME>.onmicrosoft.com, and of course to keep all subscriptions and services running.
Is that possible to achieve, and what are the steps to change it?

Thank you!
Martin

    Hi Martin,

Unfortunately, you cannot rename your hole Azure/Entra ID tenant.

You can create a new .onmicrosoft.com domain with your desired name (if the name is available and not already taken by someone else) and then change that to be your "default" .onmicrosoft.com domain for new users if not useing custom domain.

The "original" .onmicrosoft.com is created when all in the tenant is created, like an on-prem Active Directory - and that can´t be changed to, as a lot of information in the database and so is related on that.

    Add a .onmicrosoft.com domain

For this purpose, you need Global Administrator directory role and perform below steps:

    1. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, select Settings, and then select Domains.
    2. Select an existing .onmicrosoft.com domain.
    3. On the Overview tab, select Add onmicrosoft.com domain.
    4. On the Add onmicrosoft domain page, in the Domain name box, enter the name for your new onmicrosoft.com domain. Note Make sure to verify the spelling and accuracy of the domain name you entered. You are limited to five onmicrosoft.com domains, and currently they cannot be deleted once they are created.
    5. Select Add domain.

    Change default .onmicrosoft.com domain

For this purpose, you need Global Administrator directory role and perform below steps:

    1. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, select Settings, and then select Domains.
    2. Select an existing .onmicrosoft.com domain with the check mark
    3. Select the Set as default on the top menu

Let me hear if this helps.

    Hi @Martin ,

unfortunately it's not possible to rename an Azure Tenant.

But it's possible to create a new Azure Tenant with the name you like (if the name is not already in use) and move the existing Azure Subscriptions to the new Azure Tenant. Associate or add an Azure subscription to your Microsoft Entra tenant

Thank you for the prompt answers!
I was following @Michael Morten Sonne suggestion, I have added a new custom .onmicrosoft domain under Entra ID and set it as default.
Then I saw one more option "Configure initial domain", which when I clicked gave me the option to rename the initial domain. When I applied it, all users got new identities, it looks like there is an option to rename it.
For me it looks like I renamed it, not sure if that is it or if there is still something in the background associated with the old domain or maybe the account?

    Thanks.

    Best regards,
    Martin
