Hello Claire Jefferson
By default, Windows Remote Desktop will only work on your local network. You have two options for enabling Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) from outside your local network: 1. Port forwarding 2. Use a VPN
- Por forwarding means create a rule on your router that forwards external requests on the RDP port (usually 3389) to the internal IP address of the computer you want to connect to. This involves specifying the external port and the internal IP address and port.
- You can connect to the VPN, and your computer will act like it's part of the same local network as the computer at home, running the Remote Desktop server. This will allow you to access Remote Desktop and other services normally only exposed on your local network.
In conclusion, both options provide remote access solutions, but port forwarding exposes your PC directly to the internet, requiring careful security considerations. Using a VPN offers a more secure alternative by keeping your PC within a private network. Choose the option that aligns with your security requirements.

Note:
You can use Remote Desktop to connect to Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise, Windows 8.1 and 8 Enterprise and Pro, Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate, and Windows Server versions newer than Windows Server 2008. You can't connect to computers running a Home edition (like Windows 10 Home).
