When is VNET used in Azure?

I am developing a Web API using .NET 8 on AWS ECS Fargate.
I am planning to use Azure again after five years. I learned about Azure's VNET and it seems similar to AWS's VPC. In AWS ECS, VPC is mandatory.
As of 2024, is VNET mandatory for developing a Web API with .NET 8 in Azure?
I'm confused because there was no VNET during the AppService era five years ago. When is VNET used in Azure?

    Hi @K ,

Azure Virtual Networks (vNet) are used to build a network infrastructure with network(s) and subnet(s) in Azure.

Some Azure Services require Azure vNets, for instance Azure Virtual Machines. Some other Azure Services, for instance an Azure Storage Account don't require a vNet but can be integrated with Endpoints in Azure vNets.

Maybe this is helpful: What is Azure Virtual Network?

    Hi,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A community forum!
To develop a Web API with .NET 8 you don't necessarily need a vnet, which as Andreas said is used to create an infrastructure to support services such as vms. Once you've created your .NET project, you can publish it using Azure App Service.
Refer to this link for more info and deployment steps. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/app-service/quickstart-dotnetcore?tabs=net70&pivots=development-environment-vs Hope this helps.
