I see that you get the error message Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed is a generic error that means that SQL Server did not start when Setup wanted to run configuration steps. To understand why it did not start, you need to look in the SQL Server errorlog, which you find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL16.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\LOG\ERRORLOG.

If you see a message about 256 misaligned reads, you are running into a known issue where Windows 11 for some disk drives reports a sector size that SQL Server does not cope with. Microsoft has published an article with workarounds for the problem.

If you don't see the message about misaligned reads, feel free to upload the errorlog here, so we can look at it. You will need to rename to ERRORLOG.txt for the forum software to accept it.

Hi @Otis,

Please follow the below steps to remove all components of previous installed SQL Server completely:

Remove all SQL Server components from 'Programs and Features'
Backup the registry
Delete the following keys in regedit:

--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete all the sub-keys referencing SQL Server
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server
Reboot the machine In addition, please use an administrator account to reinstall SQL Server on your computer (Right click->run as administrator).

Risk is that you've been messing so much with your machine that it may be very difficult to get it right. I am afraid that this is less positive message than the wait on the Database Engine startup handle. This means that Setup breaks down earlier. But in that folder you have on the screen there is a file detail.txt. Maybe we can get some clue. By the way, what hardware do you have?

I don't know which file to go to so I can show you, so I'll just go to the file shown in the link I'm quite sure of what you said, I've tried many ways to fix it, I've also asked my friends and my subject lecturer but my lecturer can't help me at all. said that I should copy this error code and google it to fix it. I'm not surprised that your friends didn't know. Or for that matter your teacher. This situations are not fun at all. Even for an expert user. There is this exception:

2024-01-23 18:52:02 Slp: Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.Sco.ScoException: The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start.

If that does not tell you much - then we are two. Just above that there is this message:

(15) 2024-01-23 18:52:02 Slp: File 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\160\Shared\sqlmgmprovider.mof' not found!

And I assume this is where the trouble starts. Why the file is missing? I don't know, but I suppose that your repeated attempts may be the reason. How to fix this? ZoeHui gave you some cleanup instructions, but maybe they were incomplete. Here is a link someone else I helped found: https://www.sql-easy.com/learn/how-to-uninstall-sql-server/ And that user was actually able to install SQL Server successfully after following the instructions! You should also read and follow the instructions in this article before you try to install SQL Server again. If you have any experience with setting up virtual machines, this may be a better option than trying to get your laptop in order.

You would run Setup to uninstall them. But since you have been running around in the registry, I would be surprised if this is unsuccessful.
