How do I implement secure OAuth access on Outlook DESKTOP so I can POP my multiple email accounts from gmail?

Google recently sent an email that they are shuttig off access to 'less secure apps' (LSA). and that beginning Sept 30,2024, Google Workspace accounts will only allow access to apps using OAuth Password-based access. I have ~10 email addresses configured in Outlook DESKTOP (not 365) from business, personal, and nonprofit/volunteer groups that all POP mail from Google/Gmail.
I am NOT a technical person, but it sounds like this is something that will all stop working shortly unless I configure it differently.
In simple terms, can someone explain step by step, how to enable OAuth in Outlook DESKTOP? I am using the version included in Microsoft Office LTSC Standard 2021. (Outlook LTSC MSO (16.01.14332.20621 64-bit) Thank you!

Hi @Dave S ,

According to my research, Google has indeed been moving towards more secure access methods and is encouraging users to use OAuth 2.0.

As for Outlook 2021, it’s been reported that the implementation of OAuth 2.0 is not clearly documented. OAuth 2.0 is an authorization framework.

In the meantime, you could consider using app passwords for your Gmail accounts as a workaround.

Use an App password: If you use 2-Step Verification, try signing in with an App password.

Navigate to Configuration->OAuth2. Click on the "Create new" button and then select "Outlook" as the type of the app. Use the Application Id and Client secret values you got from the Azure portal. The redirect URL must be exactly the same one you used when registering the application

Thanks Jeff. Sorry, a few clarifications...the tech side of things is not my forte.

Where do I start that I should navigate to configuration-> OAuth2?

Where am I using the ApplicationID, Secret values and redirect URL?

When setting up the Account in outlook, all it asks is the Incoming mail server, the outgoing mail server and whether to use Secure Password Authentication (SPA), which presumably is sill considered "less secure", and then the password?

Again, single client of Outlook Desktop from MS office. No Exchange server or anything.

Hi Jeff, I'm having the same problem Unable to add Gmail account in Outlook 2021 using Google 2-step verification app password I have a free Workspace legacy account. I am an individual user with one email account (plus one email alias). To comply with Google’s new Oauth2 authentication with 3rd party apps , I am trying to set up my Workspace email account in Outlook 2021 but it’s not accepting the app password I’ve created. (Along the lines of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uX7nW3mMw8) In my Google account, under Security - 2-Step Verification - App passwords – I’ve created a new app password. However it doesn’t give me the option to select a device (which might be the problem???) I thought it might be an issue with my Workspace account. Hence I’ve created a separate Gmail email account and app password. However I’m having the same problem. In MS Outlook 2021, under File – Add account: 1. I enter my email address and click Connect 2. The Sign In with Google window appears with my email address – and click Next 3. The Sign In with Google password window appears – and I enter the 16-digit app password (without the spaces) and click Next 4. The Sign In with Google password window reappears – with “Try again with your Google Account password“ in red I have spent so many hours trying to work out what the problem is.
