"search by name" option working in Classic Teams, but not the new Teams.

Bit of an odd setup, but had configured address book policies to restrict searching between some groups of users within exchange. however this restriction wasn't wanted within Teams.
In the Teams admin interface if the "scope directory search using an exchange address book policy" was left disabled then searching within Teams still worked.
Using the new Teams, it seems to use the exchange address book policy whether or not the option is enabled or disabled. Although it still functions as expected within Teams Classic

In an unusual configuration, address book policies were set up to limit searching between user groups in Exchange, but this restriction wasn't desired in Teams. Surprisingly, even with the "scope directory search using an exchange address book policy" option disabled in the Teams admin interface, searching within Teams still functioned correctly. However, with the new Teams interface, it seems to utilize the exchange address book policy regardless of the option's status, while it continues to work as expected in Teams Classic.

In the Teams admin interface if the "scope directory search using an exchange address book policy" was left disabled then searching within Teams still worked.

It may take a few hours for this change to take effect in default. If it still doesn't work, you can try the following possible solutions:

Check and update if the new Teams is the latest version.

If you’re using the Teams desktop or mobile app, try using the web version: https://teams.microsoft.com/.

Clear the Teams cache from your device.

Otherwise, New Teams currently has a few features that aren't perfect, and as an alternative solution you can switch back to old Teams if you need to. Hope the above information is helpful for you!

using the web interface uses "teams classic" so as mentioned that works. It sounds like it's as you said "New Teams currently has a few features that aren't perfect"

Your are not alone ;) We have the exactly same problem as we are separating our staff, teachers and students from different school types via Exchange Address Book Policys. Everything is working as intended in Microsoft Teams Classic - but you can not find anyone from the Students / Teachers Organizational Units when using Microsoft Teams NEW. We have been upgrading our users to the "New Teams Desktop" client and have started to receive reports from our academic staff trying to create teams or even group chats to work with students, only to find out they are not appearing when searching.

We have Exchange address book policies to separate staff and students, and historically, this wasn't an issue, as the "Classic Teams" did not honour this and scoped the directory search as a whole with no filtering and allowed users to contact each other without issues or add them into groups and teams.

The setting "Scope directory search using an Exchange address book policy" is not enabled in our tenant and has never been.

Any information to shed some light on this would be much appreciated; if this is how Teams is now going to scope its search, then we need to know.
