We are running SharePoint 2016 on-prem. We have been running Microsoft Edge in IE compatibility mode for over 1.5 years for SharePoint and several other applications. This past week, when Microsoft Edge was updated to version 121.0.2277.83, not all the pages loaded correctly for SharePoint. Clickable icons were not displaying and the menus were not functioning properly. [Initially my PC was working OK, but once I cleared the browser cookies/cache, it too had the same issues.] To get SharePoint to work properly, we had to remove the IE compatibility mode for SharePoint. We are currently accessing what else in SharePoint will no longer work. So far, I've determined the following: URL links to the network shares using file://<path/filename> is not working. When you click on the link, the row is selected. It does not open the URL. Export to Excel is giving a false error message 'To export a list, you must have a Microsoft SharePoint Foundation-compatible application.' After you choose <OK>, the owssvr.iqy file is downloaded (without prompting) to the Downloads folder.

Other past issues I need to research are: The out-of-the-box Workflow Launcher does not work in Edge and Chrome browsers. The to import CSV files to a SharePoint List does not work in Edge and Chrome browsers.

What is the path forward? Will Microsoft fix the IE compatibility mode or will Edge be SharePoint compliant and the issues we're finding addressed? p.s. This isn't the only application that no longer works in IE compatibility mode.

Open Microsoft Edge and press Alt+Shift+I and it will open the Feedback form which you may use it to report these issues.

    Hi @UnderwoodMarlene-1858 ,

According to a Microsoft Community post, this version of Edge broke local links opening (file://) and the IntranetFileLinksEnabled policy set up which worked fine till the update. This issue has been reported by several users and is being investigated by Microsoft. I'll be the first to let you know if there's any new news.

In the meantime, you can try downgrading to a previous version of Edge, such as version 120.0.2210.144, which is known to work fine with the IntranetFileLinksEnabled policy.

Microsoft Edge Version 123.0.2420.97 works with IE compatibility mode for SharePoint 2016 on premise.

It may have been fixed sooner, but I couldn't tell from the release notes. This version may have fixed the link issue:

    Version 121.0.2277.106: February 5, 2024

Resolved an issue where the IntranetFileLinksEnabled policy didn't work as expected while opening file:// links.
