SharePoint word document using NEW button "can't be opened for editing"

Original post. Using Word 365, SharePoint 2013. Plain Text Content Control, Check Box Content Control, Digital Signatures

I've created a document template and set it as my managed document type. The document contains digital signature blocks, text content controls and Check Box Content Controls. I locked the template.dotx to fillable forms so no one accidentally changes it.

When I click the New button and chose my CAP_Form.

I get the error in the image.

I click on Edit in Word and it opens and displays the form. Everything looks proper. I am unable to edit. I click on edit in word which opens Word Client on my PC. At which point I get the following error.

The document is not corrupt. When I open it directly from its folder accessing the SharePoint's template location it works fine. It works fine when I click on edit the template in the document type advanced settings page. If I turn off the restricted editing it works.

Ideas on how to get this working?

As we couldn't reproduce this issue in our end, I would suggest you open a ticket with Microsoft. Experts there can have a remote session with you and help you check from the backend.
