Windows Update Issue Error Code 0x80080005

I'm trying to update my windows, but when I check for updates I get the following message:

"Your device is missing important security and quality fixes.

There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80080005)"

I tried following the steps I found on the top answer from andre at this page: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-update-error-code-0x80080005/07b6e544-a501-4492-851d-83fcb80e8f2f

but I get the same message.

When following the above steps however, typing "net stop wuauserv" gave me the following message:

"The wuauserv service is not started.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521."

and typing "net start wuauserv" gave me:

"The wuauserv service is starting.

The wuauserv service could not be started.

A system error has occurred.

System error 2 has occurred.

The system cannot find the file specified."

also typing "NET HELPMSG 3521" only gave me:

"The *** service is not started."

I'm currently running windows 10 home version 10.0.18363 Build 18363

Any help is appreciated

    Hi Colton,

To try and fix this I see two possible options:

    • Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. This is a built-in tool that can detect and resolve common problems with Windows Update. You can access it from the Settings app, under Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update. And try updating again if the troubleshooter is successful.
    • Alternatively you might want to use the Windows update assistant as your current Windows 10 build is quite old (build 18363 version 1909 went end of servicing in 2022) it can be found here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Hope this helps,

Hello, Make sure Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services are available and running. Press Windows key+R to open Run then type: services.msc Press Enter to open Services app Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service. If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK. If the status is Running, right click then select Restart Double-click Windows Update. If the Startup status lists Stopped, click Start and then click OK. If the status is Running, right click then select Restart **Please try to run SFC and DISM to check for any system errors and corrupted files. Using System File Checker in Windows - Microsoft Support After that, restart your computer. **Reset Windows Update Components If the issue still persists, please try performing an In-place Upgrade. Best Regards, Hania Lian
