I switch from General Purpose to Hyperscale. It automatically allocated 1.5 TB space while I only use 750Gb. I cannot see any options to change it. Is there any way to influence it?

    Hey Rasmusson, Pontus

    Thats a great question, and thanks for using QandAplatform

    so when switching to the Hyperscale service tier in Azure SQL Database, it automatically allocates storage based on certain factors like your database size and performance requirements. Currently, there isn't an option to manually adjust the allocated storage for Hyperscale on-demand storage.

    If you have concerns about the allocated storage size or if you're experiencing unexpected costs, you may want to review your database usage, optimize data storage, and consider reaching out to Azure support for further . i suggest you to raise a support case the link is below for you.

    they can provide insights into your specific usage patterns and help optimize your deployment for cost-effectiveness.

    If this helps kindly accept the answer thanks much.

    Thank you for reaching out. In addition to Azar's answer, you’re only charged for the actual storage allocation, not the maximum capacity. So, you won’t be billed for the entire 1.5 TB unless you use it. You're charged for storage for your database based on actual allocation. Storage is automatically allocated between 10 GB and 100 TB and grows in 10 GB increments as needed. Rasmusson, Pontus Thank you for your appreciation! Are you saying there are situations that requires +800 Gb space and that's why its set to 1.5 Tb? There could be situation where the 1.5TB allocated is essential but does not mean it will be all used. Hyperscale automatically adjusts storage based on your database requirements. If your data grows beyond the current 706 GB, Hyperscale will allocate additional space in increments of 10 GB as needed. A Hyperscale database is created with a starting size of 10 GB and grows as needed in 10 GB chunks. Each data file grows by 10 GB. Multiple data files may grow at the same time. You’re not paying for the entire 1.5 TB unless you use it. The cost is based on the actual storage consumed. In your case, the last bill of $152 reflects the cost for the 706 GB you’ve utilized. The 1.5 TB limit accounts for scenarios where databases experience significant growth over time. It ensures that your database can handle future data expansion without running out of space.

    We are paying for 1.5 TB there is no doubt about that. But if I understand you correctly you are saying that the executions of queries demand more temp space which Hyperspace senses and therefore we have 1.5 TB to be able to deal with that? It does not show in the metrics looking at max data space used.

    @Rasmusson, Pontus

    Sorry for the misunderstanding.

    Moving to different tiers should not cause increase of allocated space by itself. Someone might have done rebuild of indexes which might have doubled the allocated space. In hyperscale, the size grows automatically and to reduce customer needs to run shrink manually. We are currently running private preview of shrink on hyperscale tier and this should help customers in handling the current situation.

    Hope that clarifies better your ask.

    Regards,

    Oury
