I have a Win10 (build 2004) that has a connection to a 2012R2 Terminal Server (RemoteApp Connection). All office applications are ran from the terminal server. The Office suite is 2016 standard. The file associations had been working up to a point (point unknown) where associations were able to be pointed at the RemoteApp server to open the correct application, example Word or Excel. Now when I go to default programs, I see the the association is listed, but is greyed out, and I am unable to update or change the association. Furthermore the end user has office files on his desktop that the icons are now being displayed as white generic icons instead of the correct application. Below is what I am seeing in default applications:

I have removed and recreated the RemoteApp connection, which did not help. How do I correct and associate the files with the terminal server?38028-jb-default-app.jpg

    Hi,

Please kindly check if the problematic desktop has enabled below group policy.

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components ->File Explorer -- Set a default associations configuration file

    For your reference

Is above image you shared a good scenario? If so, could you also share a image of problematic scenario so that we could better understanding the issue?

    Thanks,

The local group policy is set to "Not Configured". The image displayed is of the problematic system. As displayed in the image, although the the association is set to use the Remote App resources, they do not open, nor do the files display the Word icon as working systems do. The association cannot be modified, if I click on the "Choose Default" I get there is no application installed, and the system only wants to look for an app in the MS store.

    Hi,

Below post seems contain some information might help with your issue.
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/74634/remoteapp-couldn39t-open-this-program-of-file.html

On RDCB Server, open the collection properities and make sure drives redirection has been checked.

On all RDS session host servers for the collection, open the group policy, make sure Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection\Do not allow drive redirection = Disabled.

If you are using rdp file to connect, make sure drive redirection is enabled in the user's rdp file ("drivestoredirect:s:*")

    Thanks,

    Eleven,

    1) drive redirection was already checked
    2) do not allow drive redirection was set to not configured, I changed to disabled.

I logged into the Win10 system, went to RemoteApp and Connections, clicked update, then navigated to default app , default app by file type, and nothing has changed. under the file type it shows the collection name:

    Hi,

In my lab test, I cannot choose a remote app associated to a file type on the local computer. I am not sure if it is by design since you mentioned you have working scenario.

I suggest to contact Microsoft Customer Support and Services where more in-depth investigation can be done so that you would get a more satisfying explanation and solution to this issue.
