NIC Teaming Issue

Our workstations are configured with NIC teaming. The IP address is a static IP. I rebooted a couple of workstations and on reboot received a 169 address. Ran ipconfig /all and noticed that the static ip was listed as duplicate and the 169 address was listed as preferred.

I checked the IP was not in use anywhere and was not a duplicate. Then started testing by rebooting workstations, some of the workstations experienced this behavior and others did not. All workstations are in the same network segment.

After multiple reboots the workstations that received the 169 address finally had the original static ip and the 169 address was gone.

Does anyone have any idea what would be causing this issue. We are not using DHCP in our network.

Are there any other network devices in your environment?

Before you assign a static IP address, use the PING command to see whether an address is in use. Sometimes, although you cannot ping IP address, maybe the machine with the dup IP address does not respond to ping's, because of hardware/software firewalls.

If your PC is in the same subnet as the duplicate IP address, you can use arp -a <duplicate ip address> to check if there are two different MACs under one IP. If yes, then you could track down the MAC address to find the device.
