Azure Migrate: using virtual appliance on Hyper-V for VMWare ESXi migration

Hello. I need to migrate VMs located on the VMWare ESXi host to Azure via Azure Migrate. Unfortunately, this ESXi host does not have enough resources to deploy another VM for discovery/assessment/migration appliance, but there is a Hyper-V host on the same network that has enough resources. Is it possible to deploy that appliance on Hyper-V but for discovery/assessment/migration of ESXi VMs? I downloaded and deployed this appliance for Hyper-V, but in its web configuration wizard there is no option to search for VMWare ESXi hosts/clusters, only Hyper-V.

    Hey,

As mentioned, you can use Agent-based migration, which will allow you to avoid installing Azure Migrate appliance on your ESXi host. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/migrate/tutorial-migrate-vmware-agent

As another option, you can use StarWind V2V Converter. It also doesn't need to be installed on the ESXi. You can connect your hosts remotely. https://www.starwindsoftware.com/v2v-help/VMfromVMwareESXiServertoMicrosoftAzure.html

Azure Migrate provides a solution for migrating VMware VMs to Azure. Let’s talk about Agent-Based Migration (VMware vSphere VMs to Azure). This method involves installing an agent on the VM for replication. Follow the process: Prepare Azure for agent-based migration. Set up a VMware vCenter Server account for Azure Migrate to discover machines. Set up an account for the Mobility service agent to install on the VMs you want to migrate. Prepare a machine to act as the replication appliance. Add the Migration and modernization tool. Set up the replication appliance. Replicate VMs from VMware vSphere to Azure. Run test migrations to ensure everything works as expected. Perform full VM migrations to Azure. Review the VMware vSphere agent-based migration architecture. Prepare Azure (create a project, set up a network, assign permissions). Assign permissions for registering the Replication Appliance in Microsoft Entra ID
