For Application Gateways (V1 SKU), we now know that we will need to migrate them to V2.   In migrating the App Gateways, we know we will be able to allocate an existing (unallocated) public IP to the V2 gateway.   Is there a way we can reserve the public IP of the V1 gateway, so that we can create a Standard public IP with that address and allocate it to the V2 gateway after the migration?

Please find the below explanation about your ask:

1. Azure public IP addresses are created with a SKU, either Basic or Standard. The SKU determines their functionality including allocation method, feature support, and resources they can be associated with.
2. In order to upgrade a public IP, it must not be associated with any resource.
3. The basic public IP you are upgrading must have static assignment. You'll receive a warning that the IP can't be upgraded if you try to upgrade a dynamically allocated IP address. Change the IP address assignment to static before upgrading.
4. Upgrading a basic public IP to standard SKU can't be reversed. Public IPs upgraded from basic to standard SKU continue to have no guaranteed availability zones.
5. So, you could disassociate the Public IP from the Application gateway, and you can upgrade the IP to Standard SKU. But as said this cannot be reserved.

NOTE: If this is a production move, then please do create a POC in the Subscription about the Public IP upgrade and then proceed with the Production change. Also please note that your Basic Public IP must be changed to Static.
