Local user profile issue - temporary profile is unable to load

Hello, We are running Windows 11 22H2 on our Azure-joined laptops in our environment. We are having an issue where user profiles are not loading correctly and going into a backup state. It then tries to load a temporary user profile but that also fails to load. The user just receives the following error when trying to sign in: The User Profile Service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded. We then have to log into the laptop with our Azure admin credentials. I then am able to go into User Profiles and I can see the original profile is in Backup status and there is a secondary user profile for the user in Temporary status. If I restart the computer then log back in as admin and delete the two profiles, the user is then able to log back in and rebuilds the profile. We have been noticing this happening more frequently lately. No real rhyme or reason for it.

    Hi pb_jberg,

    Thanks for your post.

I understand that you’re experiencing an issue where the user profile cannot be loaded on Windows 11. This issue can occur due to various reasons such as corrupt system files, issues with the user profile service, or startup errors on your PC. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

    1. Restart your computer: This is one of the simplest solutions that can often resolve many issues.
    2. Boot the computer in Safe Mode: This can help resolve startup issues that can cause user profile issues. Here’s how you can do it:
    3. Left-click the Start button, click the Power icon, hold the Shift key, and hit Restart.
    4. Click on Troubleshoot, then select the Advanced options.
    5. Click on Startup Settings and select Restart.
    6. Press 4 to Enable Safe Mode.
    7. Modify the Registry profile entry: This can fix issues with the user profile service. Here’s how you can do it:
    8. Press Windows + R key to open the Run dialog box, type regedit, then press Enter key to open the Registry Editor.
    9. Click on Yes on the UAC prompt.
    10. Navigate to the following path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
    11. Find any duplicate subkey with the .bak extension, right-click and select Rename. Remove the .bak, then right-click the subkey and select Rename.
    12. Create a new user profile: If the above methods don’t work, you can try creating a new user profile.

As for the cause, it’s hard to say without more information. However, it’s possible that a recent update to Chrome or another program could be causing the issue.

     Best Regards,

    Ian Xue
