my hotmail outlook account now suddenly showing over 22,000 unread messages

Question

i use my outlook hotmail account for business , and keep upto date reading and deleting messages, over the weekend 7 NOv 2020 , my inbox suddenly showed over 2,000 unread messages , i tried logout and in again , now shows over 22,500 unread messages going back to 2007!

how can i mark all these messages as read please, the issue seems to be with my iphone connection to outlook , my ipad and pc login do not have this issue
