The A record added in Cloudflare with the Azure VM IP is not propagated. It shows an error from the Host.

I understand that you are using a 3rd party DNS Service (Cloudflare).

Here, you have created an A record for the IP of an Azure VM.

However, DNS Propagation did not happen.

This does not look like an issue from Azure end.

Can you please check with your DNS Provider as to why the DNS Propagation did not happen?

Since your DNS is not hosted on Azure, we cannot make any comments on why the propagation did not happen.

I had raised a support request with Cloudflare regarding this issue. However, on their diagnosis, they have reported that the issue arises from the Azure Cloud server. It might be some restriction to the added IP or something.

The statement is not clear.

Any IP can be propagated (even if the DNS owner does not own the Public IP/) - even Private IPs.

Azure cannot control the DNS Propagation.

What exactly is the error message you see at the DNS Provider side?

Hi Haroon,

I use Cloudflare quite often and the longest I have waited for DNS to propagate is 48 hours. If you create an A record in Cloudflare, as long as it reaches your external DNS (or home modem) and you run a ping domain.com and it returns and IP address (Azure's) then it is fine.

Microsoft/Azure has no control over Cloudflare DNS. If you want to speak to someone from Cloudflare I suggest the following:

So, do I have to connect with my Microsoft 365 provider to resolve the issue? If the record was created and no issue is shown on the Cloudflare side, Where do we look to find the issue? Is it in the setting of the VM? Or is it in the DNS settings of the domain in GoDaddy?

Since the issue isn't resolved, we aren't able to publish the Odoo website. The website can only be published once the IP and domain are configured.

Hi Haroon,

If Cloudflare is saying the host is unreachable it is most likely due to you not having the correct NSG rules in place.

Have you tried opening port 80/443 open in your NSG or Azure Firewall? You need to ensure you have inbound security rules to allow traffic to your Azure VM.

I am sorry the email does not explain the issue.

DNS Propagation should not be affected by whether or not the web server is down. (for both A or CNAME)

As you can see, I was able to propagate 1.2.3.4 IP even though I don't own it and there is no site hosted on 1.2.3.4

Please work with your provider on why the DNS propagation does not work.

This is the A record added to Cloudflare. It was added weeks ago. The IP given is the same as the IP of the VM created in Azure.

I am sorry I don't understand how GoDaddy comes into picture.

I believe you have purchased a domain in GoDaddy and delegated the domain to CloudFlare. Correct me if I am wrong

In that case, it's possible that the domain delegation to CloudFlare was not properly configured. i.e., the NameServers may not be configured correctly.

The easiest way to confirm if this is an issue with Azure or a 3rd party is to Create an A record with a test DNS record (with some random IP outside Azure) - you may also use the same DNS record which you are planning to use for Azure IP See if this gets propagated or not. If this gets propagated, you have to reach out to Azure Support. If not, this means there is some misconfiguration and none of your DNS records are getting propagated - issue not isolated to Azure.

Please share the results of how this goes.

Yes, the domain is delegated from GoDaddy to Cloudflare. We already have the domain used on the website hosted in another IP in AWS, which is running fine with no issues. This A record is for the IP of an ERP platform (Odoo).

You shared your IP as X.X.X.205

I did the same configuration as yours with a kapiltest.customdomain.com domain

As shared in private messages, the site was reachable using the domain I created and I was not facing any issues.

I would suggest you work with your Provider and let us know what is expected from Azure to fix the error message.
