How to configure Windows Update to discover SQL Server patches?
Hi! Does anyone have experience in configuring Windows Update to discover SQL Server patches? I have an ongoing support case with Microsoft support since February 6 regarding this but they've not managed to provide me with a solution so now I reach out to the community instead. I've specifically told that I'm not asking about letting Windows Update use WSUS as this requires a lot of additional setup and I'm really interested in if Windows Update can manage this on its own so to speak. Another thing is that we have SQL Server running in MS failover clusters so we use CAU (Cluster Aware Updates) but that is really using Windows Update if you use the default plugin if I've understood i correctly. What they first told me in the support case is "If they are using default WindowsUpdatePlugin then it will only install important software updates by default. To apply any other updates, you will have to configure custom query in the plug-in for the same.". They could never explain to me what they meant by ".... configure custom query in the plug-in for the same", they just left me with that. Secondly they told me "The default plugin that integrates with WUA/WSUS should pull SQL updates, assuming WU is configured to receive updates for "other Microsoft products" but also if you have any AG configuration then CAU isn't supported." without specifying how I configured WU to "receive updates for other Microsoft products". I assumed they meant the registry setting AllowMUUpdateService=1 in the key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU and I told MS support that but they never commented on that. (I found that information whee googling but I think it would be more logical to have the value in the key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate).
That is where I am now since two weeks time. The other day MS support came back to me and said that they've forwarded my request to a "specialist". So much for waiting for some feedback and reasoning since the 6th of february. It's a bit like starting the support case again. Can you help me better than the disappointing Microsoft support that I'm starting to totally give up on? (I'm really interested in explanations and understanding and not just "do this, do that and then it will work". Thank you in advance!
