I understand that we have a limit of 50 on demand backups per server. But since the backups have a 7 day retention, does that mean as these backups drop off, that count is restored back? Let's say I run 5 on demand backups on a certain day. This leaves me with 45 more. After 7 days they drop off. Will I then have 50 again?

50 is the on-demand backup limit per server. You will not be able to trigger on-demand backup once limit of 50 is reached. Yes, these on-demand backup’s are stored it in alignment with server’s backup retention policy and will be automatically deleted as soon as they fall off the server retention period window.

I'm already aware of the 50 limit, that wasn't my question. When the on-demand backup expires, do I recoup that count? That is my question. I ran one last Friday, so I guess this coming Friday I'll know the answer since the retention is 7 days.

To answer your question, yes, as the on-demand backups drop off after the 7-day retention period, the count is restored back. So, if you run 5 on-demand backups on a certain day, you'll have 45 more backups remaining for that server. After 7 days, when those 5 on-demand backups drop off, you'll have 50 on-demand backups available again for that server.
