Websites no longer prompt me for smart card credentials. How do I fix this?

I use a smart card to access certain websites and all of the sudden, websites will no longer prompt me to select my certificates and I'm unable to access those sites. I've tried restarting, different browsers (chrome and edge), ensuring smartcard service is running in task manager, and ensuring my certificates were showing in internet options. Out of ideas on this one.

Based on the description, you cannot use a smart card to access certain websites all of the sudden, you can troubleshoot the problem as below:

1.Please check the certificate in your smart card is not expired.

2.Please check if you can access other apps or sign in the Windows using the same smart card. I mean if the smart card itself is OK.

3.Please check if the smart card reader itself is OK.

4.If you use smart card in the virtual environment （such as Azure Virtual Desktop）, please restart the virtual environment and check the result.

5.Based on the description "websites will no longer prompt me to select my certificates", what prompt did you receive? Please check the issue based on the error message or prompt message.

The smart card is not expired. I use it at work daily fine. I'm only having this issue on my home laptop. I've tried different card readers as well (the computer recognizes the device plugged in).

A box normally pops up automatically when I go to a site requiring my certificates, asking me to select which one to use. Since it doesn't do that, the browser assumes I don't have certificates and the page times out. Sometimes I can get it to start working again if I restart my computer, but doing this doesn't always work. I've restarted twice today and it still does not work.

The certificates are not expired. I use them on my computer at work daily.

I use the smart card to login to my work computer daily as well. The smart card is okay.

The reader works (same kind I use at work) and I've tried multiple on my home computer. The computer recognizes the devices as well.

Normally, when I go to a site requiring certificates, a box automatically pops up with a list of my certificates from my card so I can choose one and enter my pin. Since this box is not popping up, it assumes that I don't have certificates and the site times out.

I have gotten it to work a couple times by restarting my computer, but it stops working after a little while. Sometimes restarting doesn't work at all.

I tried finding the answer to this from my work machine, and had to laugh that you made me sign in to reply, because the site is ignoring the certificate. I had to write this with my personal computer.

When I log in at work each day, I have to use chrome for most of my work because when I hit a security check in chrome, the certificate check pops right up in most cases. Notably, the exception is this Microsoft website. Which is really weird since I am already logged into Microsoft using my certificate in another tab (chrome). There is nothing wrong with my certificate. The prompt to log in is the normal prompt used when there is no card in the card reader. And like I said, this works in chrome, so this probably has something to do with a recent change made to Edge, or Windows 11.
