Azure Application Gateway error on update configuration
When we try to update the Azure Application Gateway in the portal or Azure CLI we get an error. It doesn't matter what we try to update, the error is displayed on all updates:
Link not found: Microsoft_Azure_Network not found
Link not found: ApplicationGateway not found
Failed to save configuration changes to application gateway 'AGW'. Error: An error occurred.
The Application Gateway is running normally and in healthy state.

2024-03-18T22:27:27.6733333+00:00 Hi Jan,
It would be more helpful if we could get the full error message, but the error seems to be related to permission issue to the virtual network where Application Gateway is deployed.
Can you check if you have enough permission to the virtual network? You need at least Microsoft.Network/virtualNetworks/subnets/join/action permission on the virtual network or subnet.
You can refer to this link for more details:
Best regards,

2024-03-19T11:24:23.9966667+00:00 Hello @Jan Baggen ,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Platform. Thank you for reaching out & hope you are doing well.
We noticed your feedback that the above answer was not helpful. Thank you for taking time to share your feedback.
I understand that when you try to update or make changes to your Azure Application Gateway in the portal or Azure CLI, it gives the following error "Failed to save configuration changes to application gateway 'AGW'. Error: An error occurred".
You mentioned that the Application Gateway is running normally and in healthy state.
However, the failure to make any changes normally happens when the Application gateway is in failed state.
Could you please confirm that the Provisioning state is showing "Succeeded" for your Application gateway?
You also mentioned "It doesn't matter what we try to update, the error is displayed on all updates".
The JSON that you shared doesn't have much information on the error or any specific information about the change/update performed.
I can only see the following error "
CloseError: (:) [Set-AzApplicationGateway], CloudException
", which is very generic.I'm sharing a couple of error examples for your reference below:
Set-AzApplicationGateway : Long running operation failed with status 'Failed'. Additional Info:'Problem occured while accessing and validating KeyVault Secrets associated with Application Gateway 'app-gwwaf'. See details below:' At line:1 char:1 + Set-AzApplicationGateway -ApplicationGateway $AppGw + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : CloseError: (:) [Set-AzApplicationGateway], CloudException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Azure.Commands.Network.SetAzureApplicationGatewayCommand
Set-AzApplicationGateway : Either Data or KeyVaultSecretId must be specified for Certificate 'cert' in Application Gateway. At line:1 char:17 + $UpdatedAppGw = Set-AzApplicationGateway -ApplicationGateway $AppGw + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : CloseError: (:) [Set-AzApplicationGateway], CloudException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Azure.Commands.Network.SetAzureApplicationGatewayCommand
Could you please share a screenshot of the complete error message from the Azure Portal or Azure CLI with the command used, performing a small change/update?
Regards,
Gita

2024-03-19T11:55:47.7433333+00:00 @Jan Baggen , this is weird. I've not seen this issue before. It could be related to a backend issue where changes/updates are stuck and not processing.
To troubleshoot the exact issue here, we will need a specialized 1:1 session, where a support engineer can have a screen share session to pinpoint the issue.
So, if you have a support plan, I request you file a support ticket, else please do let us know, we will try and help you get a one-time free technical support.
In case you need help with a one-time free technical support, please respond to the private message with the requested information.
Regards,
Gita

2024-03-19T13:11:43.48+00:00 Hello @Jan Baggen , if you have support through partner (i.e. CSP subscription), then we won't be able to provide a one-time free technical support and the support request must be created by the partner only (this is a limitation with CSP subscriptions).
If possible, we would like to solve this trough Microsoft directly.
I would love to assist you with this issue, however, addressing this issue requires a thorough examination of the backend logs, which are accessible exclusively to the support team. Therefore, we cannot investigate it without their assistance.
Although the Application gateway appears to be in a successful and operational state, all updates and changes are consistently failing, which is unusual unless there's a backend operation that's stuck. In such instances, the support team may need to engage with the backend team to resolve any pending tasks or operations.
So, the best approach here is to create a support request through the partner. Once you create a support request, you can share it with us for tracking purpose.
Regards,
Gita
