What is the recommended approach to restore a RID master domain controller that has crashed? Should I restore the server from a backup or rebuild it from scratch?

    Hi @Richard Y

If you have only one domain controller in this domain , you have to restore it from backup.

If it's not the case , If you have a recent healthy backup , you can restore it from this backup or perform the following step:

    1. Disconnect from network failed domain controller from network
    2. Rebuild failed DC and connect it to network
    3. Perform metadata cleanup of failed domain controller
    4. Promote new server after the rebuild (step2)
    5. Perform seizing of RID role to move it to new server

    Hello Richard Y,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

How many Domain Controllers in your domain?

If you have only one DC (also is a RID master), you can restore it from recent backup (system state or full backup).

If you have more than one Domain Controller, you can seize (if the crashed cannot be running) or transfer (if the crashed is running) FSMO Rolers to another good DC.

Transfer or seize Operation Master roles in Active Directory Domain Services

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,
