What is the highest functional level available in Windows 2022 for domain controllers? We're planning to migrate all of our domain controllers from Windows 2016 to Windows 2022 and want to know what to expect in terms of functionality.

    Hello Lucas Budas,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

There have been no new forest or domain functional levels added since Windows Server 2016. Later operating system versions can and should be used for domain controllers, however they use Windows Server 2016 as the most recent functional levels.

What is the current forest and domain functional levels of your domain? The minimum requirement to add one a domain controller of 2022 versions of Windows Server is a Windows Server 2008 functional level. The domain also has to use DFS-R as the engine to replicate SYSVOL.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,
