how to call one addon's functions from a different addon

my apologies if I have not posted this properly.

my question is simple, the answer my not be!

I have two addons I created for visio, let's just call them "addon1" and "addon2".

In the code for addon1 how can I call functions that are part of addon2?

I have set a reference to addon2 in addon1 which now provides some intellisense when I attempt to call into addon2 from addon1 but there seems to be something missing as the subs I call do not seem to execute.

I have studied the code here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/office/vba/powerpoint/how-to/control-one-microsoft-office-application-from-another?source=recommendations and here https://www.codeproject.com/Articles/3511/Exposing-NET-Components-to-COM and the techniques are implement in my "addon2". From my addon1 I create an instance of addon2 and the intellisense dropdown lists all the functions of addon2. One of the functions just displays a message box which does appear, but any subsequent calls into addon2 give me a null reference. It's as if the instance of addon2 disappears as soon as the first call (to the message box) completes.
