Access Security to SQL Server From Client-Side Application

Question

I have a small customer that needs to have mobile access to the SQL Server database through a client-side application. What is the easiest most secure way to accomplish this? Right now, I am using basic SQL credentials with my IP range set to allow access which of course does not work for a mobile user. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
