Microsoft Authenticator App - can't add account

When I try to add my "***onmicrosoft.com" account to the Microsoft Authenticator app, the app asks me to enter my email address. After entering the email a screen appears that says "Approve sign-in request" and the text below says "We have sent a notification to your mobile device. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app to respond". But, I'm in the app trying to set up this account, so I can't open it again and if I do I just go back to the "Add Account" home screen. The only other way to verify my account that I have available is to send a code to the app, which is impossible as I don't have it in the app. I am not offered the option to send a text message or send a code to an alternate email.

It seems the only way to verify my account is to use the app. I need help. What can I do?
