Reset User password over admin.microsoft.com seems not to properly work:

  • We reset password (Automatically create a password + Require this user to change their password when they first sign in)
  • We login with this user and are first able to login with username and password BUT then in the next wizard where we need to enter the current password (The one we received from the reset) again and a new password we always get the error: “Try Again - that’s not your current password”

Exactly the same works when I reset the password over the Azure portal (portal.azure.com) I’ve tested this about 8x times with different users.
It was always the same → Reset using admin.microsoft.com → error “that’s not your current password” and reset using portal.azure.com it works (The password received from the reset wizard could be used to do the first login and then also in the password change wizard on current password)

Note: Those are hybrid identities with Password Writeback enabled.

    I've found the cause: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/azure/active-directory/password-writeback-microsoft-365-admin-center

To make sure that password writeback updates the new password in on-premises Active Directory, the administrator who changes or resets the password must use the Azure portal instead of the Microsoft 365 admin center. For more information, see How does self-service password reset writeback work in Microsoft Entra ID?.
