How do I ensure that the Front Door is using the headers for validation, like ETag and Last-Modified?
The response header I get via the back-end URL seems get, using the etag, but when the one I get from the AFD does not...

AFAIK, we don't have ETAG support in AFD. The only HTTP headers that Azure Front Door certifies are mentioned in the below article:
